What is the Cleanup Program?

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s Cleanup Program protects public health and the environment from known or suspected releases of hazardous substances. The Cleanup Program does this by investigating sites known or suspected to be contaminated with hazardous substances, assessing whether they pose any unacceptable risk to people or the environment and, if they do, overseeing contamination cleanup. Cleanup ensures properties become safe for current and likely future use.

Some examples of Cleanup sites are: Brownfields, Prospective Purchaser Agreements, Orphan sites, Heating Oil Tank cleanups, and Leaking Underground Storage Tank sites.

What is the Cleanup 2050 Strategic Planning Effort?

The ODEQ Environmental Cleanup Program has begun an important initiative to shape the future of our work: the Cleanup 2050 Strategic Planning Project. This long-term planning effort will guide how the program approaches environmental cleanups over the next 25 years and beyond, ensuring our work remains effective, equitable, and responsive to community and environmental needs.

As part of this effort, DEQ’s Cleanup Program team has met with nonprofits, community groups, industry organizations, governments, and Tribal Nations. DEQ has held meetings across the state to listen, learn, and incorporate these perspectives into the 2050 Vision. The DEQ team has hired professional consultants to facilitate these conversations and record relevant information to be incorporated into the 2050 Vision. The 2050 Vision document will be the key outcome of the Cleanup 2050 Strategic Planning Project and will be used to guide the future of the DEQ Cleanup Program.Visit our website here: www.oregon.gov/cleanup2050

How does this impact you?

You know what environmental challenges your community faces best, by sharing this information with the Cleanup Program we can better serve your community. The Cleanup Program has a big impact on Oregon’s environment and the health of people who live and recreate in the state but we are limited in our capacity to do direct outreach to all impacted communities. That is why we need you to tell us about your community and your ideas for environmental change!

By participating in this initiative, you can weigh in on our policies, our engagement with your community, and our remediation goals for cleaned-up sites. You can have a big impact on how our program changes! Please fill out our survey and help shape the future of DEQ's Cleanup Program!

Thanks so much,
