Lane County is collaborating on an exciting project called Project Sanitation Justice Eugene (PSJ-E) and we need additional volunteers. Below are some details on the project and how to get involved – and, if you know of others who might be interested in volunteering please pass along!
What is Project Sanitation Justice-Eugene?
Project Sanitation Justice Eugene is a bathroom mapping effort that will take place throughout Lane County, beginning in Eugene in January 2026. The project is inspired by the work of Dr. Megan Welsh Caroll at San Diego State University. In 2020 she launched a public restroom study that gathered data on bathroom access, basic sanitation, and conditions along public transportation routes in her region.
Our local project, first initiated by Sarah Koski, Community Resource Liaison at Lane Transit District, has grown into a collaborative effort between Lane County, Lane Transit District, Occupy Medical, and the Lane County Lived Experience Advisory Group for Unhoused Engagement (LEAGUE). Together we are working on a mapping project that will help us better understand restroom access in Lane County.
Mission
The goal of Project Sanitation Justice Eugene is to highlight the need for equitable, barrier free access to restrooms, especially for people who are unhoused. This work has the potential to improve public health by supporting access to sanitation equipment, water, hygiene products, and facilities in the locations where the community needs them most.
We Need Volunteers!
