Each year, 30 rising seniors from Willamette High School gain firsthand exposure to higher education through the “University Road Trip,” a five-day, counselor-led experience designed to make college accessible and achievable. Organized by the school’s counseling department, the program supports first-generation college-bound students and those from historically marginalized communities by helping them envision a future beyond high school.

During the trip, students visit all eight of Oregon’s public universities, participating in campus tours, student panels, and interactive sessions with faculty and staff. For many students, this is their first time stepping onto a college campus or traveling outside their community. Throughout the journey, school counselors serve as mentors, guiding reflection and helping students connect what they see to their academic interests and career goals.
The immersive experience builds practical skills such as navigating college campuses, comparing schools, and understanding admissions and financial aid processes. Pre- and post-trip surveys show increased confidence and clarity around post-secondary planning. While on the road trip, daily check-ins and reflective workbooks allow participants to share feedback and document their learning.
A Proven Impact
The results speak for themselves. Nearly 80% of students who have participated in the University Road Trip are currently enrolled in a four-year university or community college; a rate approximately 30% higher than the school’s overall college enrollment average. This impact is especially meaningful in the Bethel School District, where 44.4% of students are economically disadvantaged and college enrollment rates remain below the state average.
Community-Powered and Free for Students
The University Road Trip is entirely free for students and volunteer-led by educators. Funding comes from grants, community fundraisers, partnerships with local businesses, and private donations. Counselors provide structured preparation, family meetings, and team-building activities. Additionally, six dedicated chaperones ensure students feel supported, safe, and connected throughout the experience.
Student Testimonials
“Before this trip I was terrified of college. I saw money I didn’t have and not many options to get out of Eugene. This trip showed me that there are tons of options within our own state and tons of scholarships and funding I can get for college. Not only did I learn so much about college, but I made so many friends and strengthened so many bonds. This trip is among the best experiences of my life and now I’m really excited to go to college and pursue my dreams. I no longer feel intimidated by college, and I can only begin to imagine what my future holds for me.”
“This experience was immensely beneficial to me. I had a lot of uncertainty about what college really looked like, since I had never been on a tour or visited a campus outside of the University of Oregon and Lane. This road trip gave me much more confidence going into my senior year. I now have a clearer picture of what I want in a college, not only what the dorms, dining halls, and academic buildings look like, but also the non-physical aspects such as tuition, campus culture, and admission requirements. Going on the road trip also gave me the opportunity to grow closer with my peers, something that wouldn't normally be possible since many of us don't share the same classes. After touring so many of my possible options, I feel like I'm a bit ahead of the game compared to some of my fellow seniors, truly an invaluable opportunity.”
“This trip really gave me a better idea of how college worked, before I didn't know about dining halls and credit systems that different colleges use, as well as learning about expenses and the amount of student resources that are available. As a first generation student this trip answered a lot of my questions and made me feel more confident about the whole process.”
Help Keep the University Road Trip Free
Community support is essential to sustaining the University Road Trip. The Willamette School Counseling Department applies for grants and fundraises throughout the school year with the intention to keep the experience at no cost for students and families. Donations directly fund transportation, lodging, meals, campus tours, and program materials. On average, it costs about $450 to provide the full experience for each student. This immersive trip, which includes staying in university dorms, dining in campus dining halls, and exploring the diverse beauty of Oregon, offers an unforgettable learning experience for students that extends far beyond the classroom.
